By the Time I get to Phoenix

I love listening to the Nick Cave's version of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix."

I enjoy the cinematic quality of switching between two simultaneous narratives, - one of someone going about their normal routine who is being left behind and the other of a person on the move- and of the present moment fulfilling the past threats of leaving. But also, it's about someone who is leaving who wants very much to be missed and for the other person to regret not having stopped them from going (which may or may not be delusional since the whole song is conjecture from the standpoint of the leaver). So, it's actually sad because his words belie that he is still caught in ambivalence that normally accompanies leaving anything and anywhere.

packed the duffel. check. said goodbyes. check.
cleaned the apartment. check. returned the keys. check.
hung up the clothes for tomorrow. check. set the alarm clock. check.
ambivalent. check.
