I had about twenty something people over for a dinner party, which was the first time I've done something like that. People were wondering what the special occasion was, and I had to tell them: it was because I survived October.
October 2004: Bike Accident #1, broken and sheared left elbow in Urbana, Illinois, when front wheel caught between bricks where asphalt had spalled off.
October 2005: Bike Accident #2, broken right wrist in Champaign, Illinois, when a low rider sports car doored me (the extra high headrest obscured the fact that the drivers seat was occupied).
Hurray, I did not have a bike accident or break anything in October 2006!
I did my best attempt to cook 2 chicken, a bunch of vegetable sides, and 2 apple crumbles, which I learned, thanks to Margaret (who is my high school best friend, Abi's mom, and in whose spacious house I'm living while I'm attending Berkeley).
Here's the recipe for
Apple Crumble:
about 5-6 apples (Empire, granny smith or other tart apples are the best. You can peel or not, but if they have wax on them you might want to peel 'em)
1 stick of butter
1 cup of flour
1 cup of brown sugar.
glass pie dish
Pre-heat oven to 425.
Butter that pie dish.
Cut up the cored apples into big-ish chunks (about 3/4" squared).
Place into buttered pie dish to form a little hill in the middle.
In a big separate bowl, cut up the butter. Add in the cup of flour, mix with fingers to form small pea-sized clumps of sandy texture. Add in cup of sugar and mix. The resulting mixture should be coarse and on the dry side.
Cover apples in crumble and bake at 425F for about thirty-five minutes.
Share.
You can get creative and add in cinnamon and maybe a dash of salt, but even simple, this tastes amazing.
